A Fine Day Is Almost Here

To Sarah's Team:

The day we have all been waiting for is almost here - Sarah will be going home this weekend!

Evidently there was some discussion between the Docs and Brigid about options for discharge - whether she should stay for a few more days or go home for Easter. True to her nature, Sarah weighed in and she was very definite about being ready to go. She is very excited!

Brigid and Mark don't want any big to-do about getting home. They just want to make Sarah's return happy, and they will focus on helping her get re-acclimated, so she can soon resume her work toward recovery. But they can feel some measure of relief now because they will all be home. This is simply amazing.

I will be sure to let you know how it goes. Go Sarah!

Uncle John.

Dear Sarah, Mark, and Brigid,

I drove by your house on the way to Turkey Hill and saw a lot of activity there. I didn’t know what was happening, but now after reading your blog, I am so happy to know that the Godfrey’s will be moving home. (yeah!!) I have been reading your blog and the articles in the paper, and most of all I have been praying for you. St. Theodora Guerin, a new American saint, has been praying for you, too, because I prayed to her for you. After all, she traveled through the American wilderness to Indiana in 1840. She certainly had to endure much and must have been greatly challenged, just like all of you. God is good to those who place their trust in him.
I was looking for the CHOP address on their home page when I found the picture of another Sara from Wilkes-Barre, Dr. Sara Kinsman. She was a student of mine at Meyers, and her mom was a teacher at Meyers, too. Sara Kinsman, like you, Sarah, had some very serious health problems that threatened her life, when she was a child. Now she is married, a mother, and a pediatrician. If you have a chance to talk to Dr. Kinsman, please ask her if she remembers the report she wrote about St. Joan of Arc for her French class and tell her she was one of my favorite students.
I am sorry I have not written on this “blog” before, but I am somewhat computer challenged. However, if you are reading this note now I must have done something right.
The administration of Meyers publishes a list of all the day’s absentees on a daily bulletin. I saw Sara’s name on the list. If I can help at all on the school front, please let me know.
When I was looking up the date of Thedora’s trip to Indiana, I found the following quotes in her biography on the site that the Archdiocese of Indiana maintains about her. I know that the thoughts are not new to you because you have actually lived them, but I hope they will give you some spiritual energy.
“What strength the soul draws from prayer! In the midst of a storm, how sweet is the calm it finds in the heart of Jesus.” These words were written by Mother Theodora GuĂ©rin after surviving a violent storm at sea.
“Put yourself gently into the hands of Providence.”

“But our hope is in the Providence of God, which has protected us until the present, and which will provide, somehow, for our future needs.”

“With Jesus, what shall we have to fear?”

God bless you all, and I will end my note with the traditional VanLoon Easter greeting: He is risen! Alleluia!
Much love,
Ann Grimes

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT
BY ANDREW STAUB
STAFF WRITER

MOOSIC — Sarah Godfrey stood on the edge of the pitcher’s mound at PNC Field, set her feet and threw.

The clean, white baseball hit the ground, took a short hop and landed softly in a waiting glove.

The velocity behind the pitch wasn’t particularly strong, but the impact was: 14-year-old Sarah Godfrey is making progress.

Just less than nine months after she was hit by a car on Hazle Street in Wilkes-Barre — an accident that nearly claimed her life and left her hospitalized for five months — Sarah was taking practice throws at the minor league stadium Thursday.

The Wilkes-Barre teenager will throw out the first pitch when the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees face Syracuse at 7 p.m. on Aug. 17, the nine-month anniversary of the accident that put her in a coma for five weeks.

She threw 40 pitches Thursday, many of them crossing what would be the strike zone. Pitch 12 was high and outside, though, and Mike Cummings, the stadium spokesman and Sarah’s practice catcher, had to chase it.

“Our pitchers do that, too,” he said. “And they get paid.”

As Sarah threw, spectators applauded. Cameras flashed.

“It’s my official start of spring training,” she said. “Even if it’s the summer.”

Sarah still walks with a slight tremble, and her words are slow and deliberate at times. But her handshake is firm, and she wants to get better.

Sarah’s mother, Brigid Casey-Godfrey, helped her down the stairs in section 118.

Once on the field, Casey-Godfrey marveled at the park. The dugout. The stands. The grass.

But she marveled more at her daughter’s story.

After the Nov. 17 accident, Sarah was airlifted to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville with a traumatic brain injury.

She stayed there for almost six weeks before she moved to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s Seashore House for intensive physical therapy.

On April 7, Sarah was discharged. She still had to undergo outpatient therapy at John Heinz Rehabilitation Center in Wilkes-Barre Township and, to this day, she has therapy sessions four times a week.

She’s had to learn to walk, talk and eat again. But this fall, Sarah will take classes at Holy Redeemer High School part-time. Eventually, she wants to play volleyball again.

Her family hopes for a full recovery.

Sarah admitted she’s nervous to make the first pitch. She’ll have the support of many of the Diocese of Scranton’s student body, though, as the sold-out game is part of a special night of activities the Yankees have planned for the diocese. To commemorate her first pitch, the Yankees are personalizing a jersey for Sarah. She’ll wear No. 2, in honor of her favorite New York Yankee, Derek Jeter.

With each pitch Thursday, Sarah smiled and laughed. Cummings swears she didn’t want to leave the mound.

“It’s the first time I threw a baseball” since the accident, Sarah said, “but I’ve been working on strength and stuff because I have to do this.”

She paused briefly and smiled.

“I can’t throw like a girl.”

Sarah,
I watched you on the news on Saturday--I'm sorry that I missed your "live" pitching debut. As always, you made us proud! You are truly an inspiration and a walking miracle. I'm thrilled to hear about you attending Holy Redeemer. I hope they know how lucky they are to have you. Have a great freshman year. Visit us at Good Shepherd any time!

Hi there fantastic blog! Does running a blog like this take a lot
of work? I have
virtually no understanding of programming but I had been hoping to

have any suggestions or techniques for new blog
owners please share. I know this is off topic but I simply needed to ask.
Cheers!
